I recently read a verse that really struck me in several ways and challenged me too.
“So Simon and Andrew immediately left their nets and followed him.” Matthew 4 vs 20
The word immediately really struck out to me for a number of reasons:
1. Simon and Andrew didn’t think twice about following Jesus. They didn’t think about the cost it would be to them. They followed Him instantaneously and they didn’t hesitate.
2. Simon and Andrew were completely obedient to Jesus. They desired to follow Him so they left their fishing nets.
3. Simon and Andrew trusted Jesus. They left their possessions and their family to follow Him.
If I was in that situation, I don’t know how I would have reacted but I pray that I would have had the same response as Simon and Andrew. I think these three points also speak to us and challenge us when we share the Gospel.
What would you do?
Are we hesitating before sharing to our friends and family who do not know Jesus? Do we think firstly about what the other person may think? Are we thinking about the other person’s reactions more than what God calls us to do first and foremost?
Are we being obedient to God’s call on our life? To share the gospel at every opportunity He gives us? Are we trusting God that He will give us the right words to share, or are we thinking of our own abilities without God’s help?
Let’s be people who immediately share the gospel and who are obedient.
Father God, help us to be like Simon and Andrew who didn’t mind what people may of thought of them or said about them, but followed You, without hesitation and acted immediately. Help me to be obedient to sharing the good news about you, Jesus, and help me to be a good disciple who follows you with reckless trust and abandon. I pray that I will fully know the immediate call on my life to share the Gospel wherever I go.
